What is EPD and how is it created?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a document that provides comparable, objective, and third-party verified information about the environmental performance of products and services.

The video explains what an EPD is and outlines the five steps to create one.

Five steps of EPD creation

Step 1: Select PCR

Each product needs to follow its corresponding Product Category Rules (PCR) for instructions on life cycle assessment (LCA). Therefore, the first step to create an EPD is to select a product category the product belongs to. If there are no PCRs are applicable, the EPD owner can initiate the PCR development.

Step 2: Conduct LCA

The environmental impact of a product is assessed via a life cycle assessment (LCA) study. It evaluates a the entire life cycle of a product, from raw materials to recycled and/or waste materials. An LCA study takes between 1 and 12 months, and can be conducted within an organisation or by an external consultant.

Step 3: Compile data

The results from an LCA study are summarised in an EPD format once completed. An organisation can submit the results on EPD Portal on its own, or with the help of a consultant.

Step 4: Verify EPD

The EPD and all its associated documents undergo a third-party verification. The verification takes approximately 2 weeks, and there would be a report stating how the EPD fulfills the mandatory requirements. The verification should be conducted by a verifier, which could be an individual verifier or accredited certification body.

Step 5: Publish EPD

The final step is for the organisation to register the EPD and its associated documents in the EPD Portal for a final review. If there are no additions required, the EPD will be approved, published, and made available on the website.
